Shift Time : Festival of Ideas (2nd – 12th July 09) is set to happen in and round The Quarry park, and town-centre, in the town of Shrewsbury…

“exploring mankind’s forward motion … a festival of far reaching ideas — including robotics, artificial intelligence, animation, film, performance, exhibitions, street science and a whole host of controversial ideas. This hands-on, brains-on event is a sure fire way to dust off the grey matter. Featuring a spectacular display by Dutch kinetic artist Theo Jansen of his Strand Beest, a creature, 13 metres long, powered by the wind.”

No dedicated website/blog/programme yet — but Pete Ashton is on the case, and so it all looks promising.

Looking at the main Shrewsbury Darwin Festival website, they have some details of one Shift Time event…

3rd July 09: “Un-natural: A gene journey”. By Peter Cann & Tim Cunningham. Premiere of a musical voyage into the future. For the last eighty years, comic book artists have provided a gallery of humans with super-human capabilities. They are stronger and faster than us. They can regenerate, spontaneously combust, freeze and fly. Ancient civilisations had their ‘super hero’ myths too. Remarkably, the next generation will be able to recreate facets of those abilities and realise what had previously only been fictional fancy.
