A fine overview of the problems and opportunities facing academic journals, in the latest issue of the U.S. Chronicle of Higher Education. Not really mentioned is the possibility of developing “value-added” articles which still retain the basic printed-page format. Paid-for versions of free articles, with the paid-for version being radically enhanced via: extensive tool-tips that pop up to explain the academic jargon; sidebar summaries and glossaries; and embedded hyperlinks; maybe even (and this is something that is hinted at in the article) “plain English” summaries of the article — all of which which would be very useful for students.
