Free online data-files from ten days of work on the space shuttle. Dull, you may say. But what a ten days; they made files that map the whole of the UK at 1:50,000. Copyright free, and due to be released into the wild in a few weeks. Overlay free satellite photos onto those elevation maps, and you have a pretty fair representation of a skylark’s view of a particular area. A view that can then be seen from any angle / magnification by using suitable freeware, and then captured and traced over by an artist using Photoshop . Might we be in for a neo-geographic renaissance in beautifully accurate hand-drawn ‘isometric-view’ & “Wainwright-style” map-making? Probably not, but we can hope.
