“Two years ago a survey of 1,000 homeowners and 200 estate agents found that people on the move wanted to live near gyms, High Street brand-names and buzzy pubs. Now they want a crime-free neighbourhood, a back garden however small, and a theatre or art gallery nearby. … Six out of ten homeowners surveyed said that the sign of a prosperous residential area was not rows of pavement cafes and designer coffee shops, but well-tended gardens, window boxes and clean streets.”
