Printmaking in the West Midlands
Simon Goode of the University of the Arts London has written to Spaghetti Gazetti…
“I am planning to move to the West Midlands to run an open-access printmaking and bookbinding studio, which will provide open-access screenprinting, etching and letterpress facilities, along with bookbinding and other such services. I hope to find a few people in working and living the area to see if this idea would work. I know of a number of open-access studios in London, such as East London Printmakers or Artichoke Print Studios, and hope to create something similar (although likelier on a smaller scale) within the West Mids. If you know of anyone, or could pass on my contact details to interested parties, that would be wonderful.”
Can anyone give him a hand? It sounds like he should certainly get in touch with Birmingham Printmakers?
In related typographic/print news, my BIAD dissertation student Nathan Monk is gearing up to launch the Font Lorry website and service in Birmingham in 2009.

Hi there,
Not long ago, you asked about Naum Slutsky. He was head of Industrial Design when I studied at B’ham Art College (late 60s to early 70s). I could attempt a memoir if you like. After leaving college I found the practice of design in the Real World a pain and went in a different direction (founding Fortean Times) but those were golden years for arts talent in the UK.

Hi Bob; that sounds like an excellent idea. You might like to contact my BIAD collegue Ken Quickenden, who’s one of the authorities on the history of jewellery and silversmithing in Birmingham and the Midlands.

I’ve left a note in Ken’s pigeonhole.
