New figures on the UK videogames market, from today’s ELSPA/Game Group press release…

“The installed base of consoles in the UK has doubled from 8.8 million in September 2007 to 17.3 million in September 2008, and by the end of the year the figures are estimated to rise to 21 million. […] From September 2007 to September 2008, the Nintendo Wii installed base has risen from 1.1 million to a staggering 3.6 million.”

Good news for Midlands games developers — although perhaps not such good news for the future of PC gaming. Although I do wonder how many of these so-called ‘installed’ consoles might be old PS2’s, now gathering dust under the TV in favour of an XBox 360 or PS3. It’ll be interesting to see the full report, and find out if ‘installed’ means ‘plugged in and connected to a TV/monitor’.
