This report doesn’t seem to bode well for a decrease in the level of crime, any time soon…

“Birmingham’s planned new magistrates court were announced today [ it will be ] 15 storeys high and have 24 courtrooms. The existing Victoria Law Courts in Corporation Street will remain and will house around eight courtrooms.”

So, we can expect so-called ‘petty’ crime in Birmingham to quadruple by 2012? That seems to be the implication of adding 24 new courtrooms to the city. And, presumably, the hugely increased capacity will cater only for the ‘detected’ crimes (a tiny proportion of the whole) and crimes not dealt with by ‘cautions’? So the city seems to be anticipating an increase of maybe eight or more times the current ‘real’ crime rate? That seems difficult to believe. Maybe I’ve got it wrong, and courts elsewhere are to close? If not, the only other explaination might be that the government somehow expect the police detection rate to miraculously zoom to over 50 percent. Unlikely.
