Birmingham Open

Filed under: Artist(s), Birmingham — site admin @ in the early evening

I went down to the Birmingham Open today. The range of work was wide, but all too often one saw a superb technique applied to humdrum subject matter. Yet there was enough that caught my eye to make it worth visiting: Gillian Lockwood (giant ceramic conkers); Pamina Stewart (seashell trolls); Peter Shread (masterly woodcut landscapes of the Midlands); Steve Schofield (excellent deadpan photographs of Stoke-on-Trent people who are heavily into American culture, including a memorable picture of a Star Trek fan in costume – not on his web site); and Hannah Rumbsy (illustration combined with photography). Also Antony Potts’ 3D digital rendering of the inside of a potting shed, although he’s not findable online.
