The Ikon Gallery director is proposing an expanded Ikon Gallery, in a new building, and with a permanent museum collection of conceptual art. There can’t be much change out of £25-million for such an idea, but if the government really is about to approve the spending of £600m on a complete rebuild for Birmingham New St. railway station (read: £1bn after the consultants have been at it), then a “2.5 percent for art” cut, plus some private money, might about cover the cost of a new gallery with a decent acquisitions budget. Nice timing.
