Wonderful news… “Birmingham Central Library: Demolition work begins”. Good riddance to the hideous old bunker.

The bunker was claimed by some to have been an expression of an era, and thus worth keeping as an exemplar. But the true architectural expression of an era can only be spontaneous, unforced and organically rooted in its society. The bunker was not that, being instead the artificial brutalist product of a socialist worldview, pushed down from above onto an indifferent or hostile public. As such, the structure can make very little claim on history — plans and photographs will more than suffice for the architectural historians, and those who don’t shudder and who want more of the style can visit East Germany or Romania.
