The Sunday Times surveys a new crop of back-bedroom computer games

“Enthralling gameplay is what wins the hearts and minds of most gamers, and the tastiest morsels are being served by a new wave of young independent developers, many of whom are British.”

But what support will they get? If they were young film-makers they’d have the publicly-funded film-maker support agencies drooling all over them. But state support for games makers is nil. As the head of Sony said of UK games development, a year ago…

“We don’t mind if it’s hard support, in the form of tax incentives, or soft support such as training schemes. We just want some acknowledgement, anything,” … “the UK Government has done nothing. I can’t imagine Britain competing against China and India and other Asian markets effectively 15 years from now if it’s not supported by the Government.”
