Ooops. An artist sent his sculpture —and its plinth— to the Royal Academy open. The sculpture was lost en-route, but the Royal Academy opened up the crate with the plinth in and coo-ed over it. They actually selected the plinth for the show. Because, hey, don’t all mortuary slabs have that ‘marvelous negative capability’ thing?

So far as I know, there’s no cultural history of the pedestal/plinth. Perhaps there should be.
