According to the BJoP, a recent BAPLA survey claimed that commercial unauthorised reproduction of photographs and illustrations cost £4.2m in lost revenues. Most of that will probably be the stock library pictures of BAPLA members. But if a freelance artist or photographer feels compelled to act, then a fee of £30 will initiate a Small Claims Procedure for up to £300, and the claim is made through the court local to the commercial infringer. The Law Society can provide the names of three copyright specialists within the court’s geographical area, who should be able to discuss the problem briefly on the phone for no fee.
