I bought some old discarded art books from my university library for 50p each, thinking I might sell them on eBay. Of course, I picked the most interesting ones, and now the problem is… well, they’re interesting. And so now I no longer want to sell them. Ever seen the incredible all-wood stave churches of Norway? Neither had I, and now the sumptious 1974 photobook on them is something that’ll stay on my shelves. The same goes for a world survey of vernacular/hand-made street signage. One I didn’t buy, but which was an eye-opener all the same, was a photobook of portraits of “national worthies” — 25 years after it was published not a single one of them had either a name or a face that I recognised.
