DCMS fills its hole

Filed under: Artist(s), Birmingham, Creative industries — site admin @ in the early morning

The Dept. of Culture Media and Sport is reported to have filled its financial black hole, at least for this year. However, the result is that…

“DCMS will have to find [yet another] £10m savings across its budget, and the burden of that will fall on culture. One resultant economy is likely to be the delay of the move of ACE [Arts Council England] West Midlands into new premises.”

This is to do with the office changes suggested by the Council’s restructuring document during the summer, which are aimed at making £6.5m of cuts and axing 21% of staff by April 2010…

“East Midlands and West Midlands have geographical and economic integrity, and should be joined with the South West to form one area” … [ to become one of ] four areas rather than nine regional offices”

Laura Dyer is reported to have been confirmed as “Area Executive Director, Midlands and South West”.

And on top of those cuts, and possibly more from the DCMS — the Conservatives have chipped in, suggesting last week that…

“There was a warning that the Arts Council and MLA [Museums, Libraries and Archives Council] would not be exempt from the reform of the quangos”
